Fire, fire everywhere...the update

This is a picture my friends took (one of the couples that lives in the complex).

Turns out this incident was the seventh in a string of apartment complex fires in my area since Sunday! Luckily in this case, no one was injured but 25 people and 1 infant were displaced.

If you want to see some pics (as I was unable to email them from my phone) go here. Picture #2 was from my view.

Holy smokes!! I'm glad that you're OK and I'm really hoping that your building isn't on the list for a fire of its own. :( Please tell me you have an extinguisher in your kitchen...

No, but that is the first thing I am going to buy this weekend. Along with a fire safe (surprise, surprise the boy took the two we had).

It's "funny" b/c someone made the comment that these apartments are built exactly the way you are taught to build a fire. They are on stilts. The ground underneath is covered with leaves and dry pine needles (tinder). The stilts provide the air flow and the rest of the apartment is made of wood. No wonder it went up so quickly.

Any other fire safety tips for me??

Um... move? Preferably to an all concrete building?

I would suggest investing in some renter's insurance (only around $100/yr) and make a very detailed list of EVERYTHING in your apt! Home fires suck! Be safe!!

Yes, I definately have renter's insurance (it's way to cheap not to have) and did the whole documentation thing..Certainly put the fear of God in me, that is for sure.

And I now own a fire extinguisher...two actually (;
